Here you can find the results 11 months after my small 600 graft hairline refinement that I have talked about in a previous post, it also charts 5 years from my original hair transplant with Hasson And Wong and shows just how well that hair transplant continue to look good as the years go on. It also demonstrates to me the benefit of taking propecia as it has held my native hair well over the 5 years and my lower part of my crown still has native hair, this was hair that was falling out fast before going on the medication.

I think this is a first in hair restoration documentation but I could be wrong. “Dave” came to Dr. Wong to have a hair transplant a few years ago. In our discussions leading up to his procedure we discussed my own website and how it helped him with his decision making process. It was then that Dave and I came up with the idea to take the documentation process to the next level and document everything with video.

After receiving hours of video footage of Dave’s experiences during his recovery and subsequent result the final edit turned out 18 videos showing more detail as far as what one patient experienced after surgery than any where else by anyone else. I honestly believe that no one has every gone to so much trouble to share their personal journey than Dave to whom I’d like to extend a very big “THANK YOU!”.

I have modified the table of contents below as the final number of videos was more numerous than I anticipated. I kept each video to +/- four to seven minutes.

Video 1 Dave’s History

Video 3 Journey To Vancouver

Dave and his wife just came off of a month long trip before they left for Vancouver so Dave was exhausted when this video began

Video 4 Thoughts During Surgery Part 1 Here is Dave during surgery giving his impressions of the procedure so far.

Video 5 Thoughts During Surgery Part 2 This is part II of the intra-surgical interview where Dave discusses the procedure.

Thoughts During Surgery Part 2

Video 6 Here in part VI of Dave’s video diary the procedure is complete and he gets a few post-op instructions and a final chat with Dr. Wong

I hope you enjoyed the video as much as I did I believe Dave really takes you on a journey and answers so many questions pre and post op and goes through the same set of emotions that many of us do it’s a real education and I suggest anyone who is interested in a hair transplant or someone who has recently had one to sit back and watch all the videos.

Big thanks to Dave

Very good post from Joe I thought it was relevant to posting here

Well well well. Jason Gardiner of “Dancing on Ice ” fame ( a popular show in the UK) just revealed that he has had a modern day hair transplant. I think this is a great announcement for two reasons. First, it allows for further justification, if not acceptance, of men undergoing cosmetic surgery. Especially in the UK cosmetic surgery for men is a “hush hush” taboo that any self respecting Brit would rather drink acid than admit to having participated in.

The second reason why this is a good thing is because Jason’s celebrity status brings into the light the proper exposure for modern day surgical hair restoration. This will serve to dispel the stereotype that hair restoration still consists of the “plugs” that everyone always thinks about when anyone mentions the phrase “hair transplant”.

However, the thousand dollar question is; is Jason Gardiner’s hair transplant really as full and dense in reality like seen on television? The other morning he appeared on a popular UK morning show called “This Morning”. He appeared with his surgeon to discuss the procedure and his final results. Now, first off, the results look quite good of which I am very happy for Jason. He discussed the psychological trauma he went through from dealing with his hair loss and he talked about how the hat he’s worn over the past eight months has been a crutch to lean on. I can relate to this. However the result itself is grossly misrepresented . How you may ask? Jason Gardiner’s hair transplant procedure consisted of 3501 grafts. After careful examination of the available photos around the web Jason falls somewhere between a NW5A and a NW6 on the Norwood Hamilton hair loss chart. 3501 grafts will NOT give the coverage and the density that he showed off on television. It is simply impossible as the end result I saw looked every bit as if he had native and original pre-hair loss density. How is this possible? Is the result just that good or is there something more nefarious at work here? I claim the latter.

What I saw when Jason was showing off his great result was a lot of makeup. More specifically Jason Gardiner was using what is known as “concealer”. This includes, but is not limited to, products such as Toppik, Dermatch, and Couvre. These products are used by untold numbers of men and women in the entertainment industry on stage, in film and in television and they work very well. They area also available online for anyone that just wants to give their hair a temporary boost. I say “temporary” because these products need to be washed out at the end of the day. They are easily applied and make a for a very convincing result. Knowing what I know about hair restoration there is simply no way that 3501 grafts on an area of hair loss as large as that found on Jason Gardiner before his hair transplant could give a result with that much coverage and that much density. I am by no means accusing Jason Gardiner of intentionally misleading the public. Far from it, actually, as his life revolves around the fashion industry and he is used to wearing make up on television and for public appearances (as all celebrities are). I think he thought it was a natural requirement and in fact was most likely insisted upon by his agents, the show’s producer or any of the other “powers that be” that have a say in his public image. Regardless, the public presentation of Jason Gardiner’s hair transplant result as being anything other than an enhanced version of what is possible with hair restoration is simply wrong and I wish there were a way for his true result to be revealed. I think the only way that that will happen is if/when a paparazzo photographer catches Jason in a candid moment when the last thing he expects is a camera catching him as his true self. However, if Jason Gardiner actually ever reads this I’d be more than happy for him to respond and talk about the real nature of the result he shared on television. In fact, if he were to reveal his true result and it is actually as dense as it was on that show I’ll donate 1000.00 US to any charity of his choosing. If it is not as dense as it was during his unveiling then he can donate 1000.00 US to a charity of my choosing. The challenge is on.

I am delighted to announce that Dr Wong and Jotronic will be joining myself in London the second week of May, the exact date and venue has yet to be decided but it is likely I am told to be the 7th, 8th and 9th. If you are interested in meeting with Dr. Wong during this time please send an email to myself at ukconsultant@hassonandwong.com to express your interest. You will then receive an email with a form to fill out. Once the form is filled out you will need to send the form along with appropriate photos back to ukconsultant@hassonandwong.com. You will then be assigned an appointment time on the allotted date(s) for your consultation. Please note that this is a meeting only for those interested in Dr. Wong’s assessment. If you are interested in Dr. Hasson’s assessment please do not ask for a reservation with Dr. Wong.

As the January consultation day booked up so quickly I am pleased to confirm another day of consultations on Wednesday the 2nd of March. I have a private meeting room booked 5 mins walk from Kings Cross station which is one stop on the underground from Euston station which serves most links from the North. Face to face consultations are free of charge and will last approx 45 mins, in that time I will be able to talk you through the procedure at Hasson And Wong, talk about your situation and hairloss history and your expectations from surgery. I can give you my opinion on your laxity and density and take some photos for Dr Hasson or Dr Wong to assess.

Following the consultation you will receive an official Hasson And Wong recommendation which will detail the graft recommendation, the objective of the surgery and the costs involved. If you would like to meet up in person for a chat please contact me by email at ukconsultant@hassonandwong.com or call me on 0757 8164162. As I mentioned there is no cost for this consultation I just ask that if you book an appointment you do your best to attend or give sufficient notice if you are unable to.

The article below was written by Dr Hasson and I felt it was very interesting, I have often found that my hair looks better at certain lengths. I have had a very large area transplanted at not great density so the shingling effect that Dr Hasson mentions comes into play with my hair. Too short will not give me the coverage that I require whilst too long and yes it does give the coverage if styled correctly but because my hair is wavy it seems to cling together which acutally makes it look thinner, bizarre I know but it does prove that you need to experiment with new styles and lengths until you get what you are happy with- but it is great to be able to have hair to experiment with.

Dec. 12th 2010

-The following article by Dr. Hasson emphasizes what I have been saying for a long time about hair styles and what is possible, what is not and why.

“Frequently patients ask us about styling options after the hair grows in from their hair transplant. Will they be able to style their hair in any fashion or will they be forced to style it in a particular way to maintain coverage and naturalness?

In general,if the transplanted hair is directed correctly the styling options will increase with higher transplant densities. At low density it is important to comb the hair in a particular direction to maintain the hair shingling effect to bridge over bald scalp until the hairs reach the next FU at which point the hairs from that next FU will take over the coverage function. In addition lower densities will require longer length hair for coverage. However, there is a point where the hair can be too long thus making the hair appear to give less coverage. Each patient is different so it is up to the individual to find the best length to maximize coverage.

If an individual intends to part their hair through a transplanted area that was previously bald the transplanted hair density required rises dramatically. The shingling effect is largely negated here and what becomes impacted is the distance between transplanted FU’s. Generally for a part to look natural transplanted densities of 50 FU per cm2 and up are necessary. Obviously the hair characteristics such as shaft diameter, color and curl will come into play as well.

As you can see the patients expectations with regard to styling should be an important part of the pre-op consultation. With sufficient donor availability patients with ever demanding expectations can be satisfied but it is important to identify those patients who are demanding in the absence of sufficient donor. These are the patients who should be counseled more extensively to avoid later disappointment.

Victor Hasson MD”

So Vancouver seems a long way to fly for a hair transplant and it must be really expensive right? Wrong. A few people that contact me look at the results on the website and are really impressed by what they see but believe that surgery is carried out in the UK as soon as I correct them they lose interest because the idea of travelling abroad for surgery sounds expensive and too much trouble. A flight to Vancouver from London Gatwick takes 9 hours approx and costs start in the region of £400- 600 for a return flight. The clinic will offer you a discount of $400 of the cost of your surgery towards these costs and book and pay for 2 nights accomodation in Vancouver.

I know to my cost how choosing the the wrong clinic based on location and ease can be a false economy if you end up having to go back for a second session to be repaired you will soon end up regretting not getting it done right in the first place. One factor that seems to put a few people off is what if there is a problem after surgery, well quite simply done correctly the odds of this are very, very slim. Between Dr Hasson and Dr Wong they have performed over 10,000 hair transplant surgeries. You are free to fly home the next day after surgery as most do some stay in the city for a few days and come back to the clinic for hairwashing and even a haircut! Others even make a holiday of it and stay for two weeks and have the clinic remove their staples for them.

This brings me onto the last point staple removal, the clinic supplies you a goodie bag on leaving the day of surgery which includes some pain relief for the first couple of days, a baseball cap, some shampoo and the staple removal tool- this is a really simple little gadget that is very easy to use and can be done by a family member, partner or friend. The whole process of staple removal can be done in 10-15 minutes max and there is minimal pain if any.

Here is a view of Downtown Vancouver from the surgery room.
